downloading music illegaly is no thing to throw around, you can get 5 years in prison and/or fines upwards of $250,000

yes downloading without paying if it is not free is stealing
you are stealing the intellectual property of another person when you do so
why do we do it?
have you ever seen anyone actually prosecuted for this?

looks to left*looks to right*pulls out cell phone*calls FBI*ok they fell for the bait!*
/end sarcasm

My mom taught me to swear and drive offensively.

And I'd laugh my butt off if the RIAA found this thread and traced
your IP's.

Wait, are you talking about this "pirating" thing I heard about in the previews before the movie I paid 8 DOLLARS AND 50 CENTS to go see? I would never do that because the company that charged me 8 DOLLARS AND 50 CENTS to have the opportunity to watch a movie ONE TIME said that it's bad and it hurts people who don't make much money in the first place. I would be depriving someone of 8 DOLLARS AND 50 CENTS that they honestly earned by letting me watch their movie. The recording and film industries need money just like the rest of us, and I'd hate to know that I kept them from having it.

Some artists like Milla Jovovich release songs for free on the net. Totally legal. People who say "downloading free music is illegal" make it harder for new artists who release their stuff for free to be heard, by using that terminology.

Actually, quite a lot of this "illegal" business is just the record companies mewling. If you haven't noticed, the only people who have been prosecuted against in the United States concerning this matter are those who paid for music that was not licensed under copyright to be sold by that vendor. IE, Napster premium subscription and KaazaLite Users were, to my knowledge, the only ones attacked by record companies.

A lot of copyright laws indicate that the FREE distribution of copyright materials is considered FAIR distribution. IE, It is not illegal to record a television show off your VCR and send it to your aunt.

But it IS illegal to record that same show and sell it on E-Bay or a street corner.

In fact, most bands become more popular through the free distribution of their materials. The Grateful Dead, for example, actually did and still do encourage the free distribution of their music; that's one way they got so popular.

Also, downloading a backup of something that you already own a liscence to is within your legal rights. For example, downloading any kind of video game roms at all that you already have ownership of is completely legal.

In short, what classifies "Illegal" in this case is subject to scrutiny.

Not as though downloading is bad. They make millions of dollars anyway.

Its not whether they lose money or not.
Its just that its wrong.

If I stole 100,000,000 dollars from Uncle Bill, is he gonna go broke?
Hell no!
Last I checked, he was worth US$46.5 billion dollars.
That equates to 0.21% of his wealth.
And that equates to losing $0.21 when you have $100.
However, because it doesn't dent his wealth, does that make it right?

*mutter mutter mutter* I'm getting off-topic here.

If there's something wrong with my calculations, point it out, or don't (not like it affects anybody anyway).
My math sucks.

If you've posted here, you've incriminated yourself.

Hear those sirens? They're outside YOUR DOOR.

By the way, I do it too. But I'm lying. I swear.

You know they'd have to have proof before they could do anything to you... If you hear sirens outside of your house... QUICK! Microwave your hard drive(s)!

The lost files would be so much better than the 250k fine you'd get.

Nobody will bother to go and arrest/fine those of you who pirate music off the Internet, because if they do, well...they're almost guaranteed to have done it themselves, so why would they do it?

Hmm where I'm from, its more of a "do as I say, not as I do" kind of attitude.
But piracy is rampant there and at every corner you'd see these peddlers selling their stolen stuff.
